You need to be familiar with the following terms for units of measurement. You may be asked for a suitable unit of measurement for a certain job.

Units of distance:
​
Metric system: Millimetres (mm), Centimetres (cm), Metres (m), Kilometres (km)
​
10 mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 m
1 000 m = 1 km
​
Imperial system: Inches, Feet, Yards, Miles
​
12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
1760 yards = 1 mile
​

Units of weight:
​
Metric system: Milligrams (mg), Grams (g), Kilograms (kg), Tonnes
​
1 000 mg = 1 g
1 000 g = 1 kg
1 000 kg = 1 tonne
​
Imperial system: Ounces, Pounds, Stones, Tons
​
16 ounces = 1 pound
14 pounds = 1 stone
160 stones = 1 ton

Units of volume:
​
Metric system: Millilitres (ml), Litres (l)
​
1 000 ml = 1 litre
​
Imperial system: Pints, Gallons
​
8 pints = 1 gallon
​
