If you are asked for the total of two numbers, that means you need to add them up:

What is the total of 20 and 30?

20 + 30 = 50

​

The total of 20 and 30 is 50.

If you are asked how many more one number is than another, you can find out by subtracting the smaller number from the larger number:

​

How many more is 60 than 50?

​

60 - 50 = 10​

​

60 is 10 more than 50.
